1/9Bettelli evened out my skin tone with foundation and concealer. She then lined my inner rims with black pencil and smudged the pigment low underneath my eyes. "The colors look much more fun over black," she said.
2/9First, Betelli swirled a fluffy shadow brush into cyan blue cream (M.A.C. Paint Stick in Cyan) and brushed and thoroughly blended the shade underneath my brows, onto the temples, and up toward my hairline. She followed with a pale turquoise (M.A.C. Pro Palette Refill Pan in Aqua) on the inner half of my lids, and a purple-blue powder (M.A.C. Pro Refill Pan in Cobalt) around the outer corners and dragged to the hairline. Or you can try the
. "With these kind of colors, you can really apply them in any order," she said. To cover my brows, she combed the light blue cream through the hairs with a clean mascara wand.
3/9Bettelli came up with this genius trick to create fishlike scales on my temples, the tip of my chin, and hollows of my cheeks. She bought a bag of potatoes in plastic netting, enlarged the hole at the top, and slipped it over my head. Then with a fluffy brush, she tapped a layer of M.A.C. Paint Stick in Marine Ultra through the net and topped that with a mix of M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Marine and
. "You always want a cream first so the shimmery powders have something to stick to," Bettelli said. For the ultimate scaly touch, she added a wash of M.A.C. Glitter in Reflects Turquatic and Pigment in Teal all along the sides of the face.
4/9Taking the potato bag off my head and holding it up to my neck, we used the same trick to bring the scales down my neck and onto my collarbone (remember, cream first, then powder). On Halloween, I'll be taking the scales onto my shoulders and all the way down my arms.

) to create feline flicks along my top lashes—your favorite liquid liner would also do the job.
6/9Next came the lashes. Bettelli applied them on top M.A.C. 34 Lash and on the bottom M.A.C. 35 Lash. Use
to build as much volume as you would like. For a gill-like effect, for the latter, pick a stubby pair that's longer at the outside ends and apply them upside down. Don't try and line them up exactly along your lower lashes, either. Instead, lay them down in a straight line, leaving a gap at the outer corners.

7/9What's a mermaid without a little sparkle? Bettelli loved these iridescent sequins I found at a craft store and used lash glue to stick them on in a cluster above the arch of my brows.
